Steal My Idea: GM Resource Update

A while back, I posted a list of GM resources. Earlier today, I updated it with some new content, something I’ll be doing whenever I find a resource worth adding.

This time, it was a resource dump from a fellow Reddit user on r/DnDBehindtheScreen (which if you’re not a part of, join).

The dump has loads resources, but my favorite upon first glance was http://www.lordbyng.net/inspiration/. It’s random generator that produces items (weapons, armor, or trinkets) that are magical but less powerful than a +1 item. You can choose if the items should have 1 or 2 magical properties, both of them very minor. Some of the effects are more powerful but only work a few times.

For example:

Visionary Javelin of Spring Rain

Weapon (Javelin), uncommon (requires attunement)

The weapon does an additional 1 elemental damage based on the color of the bearer’s eyes: (amber: lightning, black: necrotic, blue: cold, brown: acid, green: force, gray: thunder, hazel: poison, purple: psychic, red: fire, white: radiant)

The weapon contains a pool of healing energy that can restore up to 30 hp. The bearer may use an action to plant this weapon in the ground and release this energy. While planted and undepleted, creatures that end their turn within 10 feet of the weapon are showered in warm rain that restores 1 hp per round. A long rest restores 1d6 hp of energy to the weapon’s pool.

Drunkard’s Cap

Wonderous item, uncommon (requires attunement), uncommon (requires attunement)

The bearer always knows the direction to the closest alcoholic beverage.

Feathered Bludgeon of Twins

Weapon (Greatclub), uncommon (requires attunement)

The bearer may use their reaction to reduce fall damage by 1d6 until the end of turn. They cannot use this feature again until completing a long rest.

This item is part of a pair of identical items. The bearer of either knows the location of the other at all times.

Leaping Halberd of Lightning

Weapon (Halberd), uncommon (requires attunement)

Contains 1d4 unreplenishable charges of the Jump spell (1st level).

The bearer may choose to deal Lightning damage with this weapon and gain a +1 bonus to damage.

Forgotten Padded Armor

Armor (Padded Armor), uncommon (requires attunement)

The bearer may spend an action to attempt to ignite the old magic in this armor with a DC 13 Charisma check. If successful, treat this as a +1 armor as long as the bearer maintains concentration on this effect, maximum 10 minutes.

Brawler’s Breastplate of Crystal

Armor (Breastplate), uncommon (requires attunement)

Whenever a bearer makes an attack with an improvised weapon, treat as a +1 armor until the beginning of the bearer’s next turn.

Treat as +1 armor until the bearer takes a critical hit, at which point it loses this property forever.

Thunderous Splint Armor of Vigilance

Armor (Splint Armor), uncommon (requires attunement)

Contains 1 unreplenishable charge of Shatter cast at 2nd level.

The bearer gains +2 to their Passive Perception.

Of course, you can modify the item to your liking. I’d probably take Brawler’s Breastplate of Crystal and drop the crystal part (breaks when wearer takes a critical hit).

True Splint Armor

Armor (Splint Armor), uncommon (requires attunement)

The bearer may cast True Strike once per day.

Verdant Boots

Wonderous item, uncommon (requires attunement), uncommon (requires attunement)

The bearer may cast Druidcraft once per day.

Sometimes the piece doesn’t quite mesh with the power:

Burglar’s Plate

Armor (Plate), uncommon (requires attunement)

The bearer gains +1 to Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) checks. (for thieves who care more about AC than sneaking, I suppose).

Projecting Boots

Wonderous item, uncommon (requires attunement), uncommon (requires attunement)

The bearer can send messages mentally to willing characters within 30 feet. This communication is one-way only (I’m sending a secret message with my feet).

Regardless, you can change the item to better fit the ability, ignore it, or embrace the strangeness.

Going through it, you’ll find some repeated abilities, but it’s fun nonetheless. I love having low-powered items littered throughout a game. I will be using this for my next campaign.
